A score of 14 or 16 out of 36 often ends a conversation before it starts. Before you decide, look at where the points were lost.
Step 1: which kootas scored low?
- Lost Varna (1), Vashya (2) and Tara (3): 6 points gone, little practical significance for most astrologers.
- Lost Yoni (4) or Gana (6): temperament and intimacy differences worth talking about, not deal-breakers by themselves.
- Lost Graha Maitri (5): you may think differently - matters more.
- Lost Bhakoot (7) or Nadi (8): these are the doshas. Check the exceptions.
A 17 that lost only Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni and part of Gana is very different from a 17 that lost Nadi and Bhakoot.
Step 2: check the cancellations
- Nadi dosha cancels for same rashi / different nakshatras, same nakshatra / different rashis, or different padas.
- Bhakoot dosha cancels when the Moon-sign lords are the same or friends.
Once a cancelled dosha is treated as matched, many "low" scores rise well above 18 in an astrologer's reading.
Step 3: look beyond the Moon
Guna milan only compares the two Moons. A fuller reading looks at each person's 7th house, Venus and Jupiter, manglik status and the dashas both will run in the coming years.
Step 4: decide as a family
Kundli is one input. Values, communication, career plans, money and family expectations decide most marriages. If everything else is right and the doshas are cancelled, many families go ahead; some also do a simple shanti puja.
